The Canvas Cafe

The Canvas Cafe is a social enterprise community vegan cafe and event space in Spitalfields striving to support grassroots positive social change through innovative and impactful projects in our local area. We work with organisations and individuals fighting for a fairer, healthier, safer, greener, more equal world. The Canvas Café is a mobilisation hub. We bring people together and give them a platform for their passion and projects, each month hosting over 60 free community events and groups throughout our event spaces, ranging from free Yoga and mental health drop ins to book clubs and meetups. As a Cafe, we provide our local homeless community with hot meals and drinks that have been paid-forward by the generosity of our customers. This offers not only vital food, but also kindness and compassion to those in genuine need, plus presents an easy opportunity for our customers to directly help people who are homeless. We maximise this impact once a fortnight at the Crisis Skylight Centre where, thanks to partnerships with local businesses, we provide hot home-cooked meals for the homeless men and women there. So far we’ve fed +1,400 homeless people at Crisis, through partnerships with Investec, Nuffield Health, Wieden + Kennedy and many other local organisations. This summer we also launched a free lunch project for local children at risk of holiday hunger throughout the summer holidays. Connections matter. Strong ties with community provide us with happiness, security, support and a sense of purpose. Being connected to others is important for our mental and physical wellbeing and is a protective factor against anxiety and depression. There’s also the importance of feeling engaged, proactive and powerful to make a difference; at The Canvas Cafe, we believe everyone can make a positive impact to their world, and we exist to enable everyone to do just that.

Charity art plates project with Gilbert and George

Jan 17, 2020

The Canvas Cafe, on Hanbury Street just off Brick Lane, supports and runs projects that improve the lives of others. This year we’re lucky enough to have partnered with world-renowned, yet local to us, artists Gilbert & George on a project raising direct funds to feed our local homeless community. We’ve created dinner plates with Gilbert & George’s artwork on. The sale of each plate will directly go towards providing hot home cooked meals to homeless people through our cafe. Here’s a link to a recent Guardian article - https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2019/dec/18/gilbert-george-put-art-on-plates-to-help-feed-the-homeless We are currently selling the plates via our online shop and various partnerships with galleries and art spaces. We would love Business Development and PR support to help us sell more plates. If you're interested then please get in touch for a chat!
