Capikooa was founded in 2017 by Warren and Maria (me). We were inspired to set up the company by our interest in the environment and my research into child development. Before having children, we enjoyed scuba-diving, and this opened our eyes to the problem of waste, particularly plastics in the ocean. We started making some small changes at home to try and reduce the amount of waste we produced. But when we had children, we were overwhelmed by the amount of plastic toys we received. Most of them never got used. When my daughter was born I wanted to find out about everything related to my baby’s development so I started learning about child development. When we were expecting a second child, we wanted to do something to combine these two passions: protecting the planet, particularly waste in toys, and child development. That’s how we came up with Capikooa.I went back to work 3 days a week and had the kids the other two. We found a few hours to work on the business in the evenings after the children had gone to bed. In December 2019, I quitted my job to work for Capikooa full time. Our first product is the Curvy board, a sustainable, open-ended toy for children to learn through play. It keeps children active and promotes their imagination and creativity (as they created their own ways to play)Our purpose is:- Toy waste - one toy, endless uses, reducing the amount of plastic toys.- Child development in the early years - Movement will help maturing the vestibular system therefore children will be more ready for school (sitting still and focusing, holding a pencil and writing…) An increase in children's creativity will mean that when faced with a problem they will think outside the box to solve it.
