Mission

Seafarers UK provides support where it is needed the most, to alleviate poverty, combat the effects of physical and mental illness and provide respite to those in need. Life at sea is tough but life back on land can often be even more testing and the challenge to support our seafarers is getting harder. There are around 1.5 million people in Britain’s seafaring community and, despite a reduction in the number of people who work at sea, the total number of people who live in poverty is rising.  We sometimes forget that the United Kingdom is an ‘island nation’, and we rely on seafarers for many of the things we take for granted. How absolutely essential is the sea and its place in our national life?  It defends us, it feeds us, it supplies us, and the very special people who work on it have very particular needs.
