Mission

The Schumacher Institute promotes the legacy of E.F.Schumacher, one of the seminal economists of the 20th century and the father of the modern environmental movement who coined the phrase 'Small is Beautiful'. It works to promote the values of localism, sustainability, and the application of critical systems thinking to solving society's most pressing problems.   The Schumacher Institute for Sustainable Systems is an independent research organisation that honours the work of E.F. Schumacher - a seminal influence as an economist and author of the book Small Is Beautiful.

The Schumacher Institute: Promotes localism through 'Bristol Green Roots', a community project documenting Bristol's role in the development of industry and environmental protection; Develops the next generation of environmental and community leaders through our Open Platform and Untapped Energy programmes focusing on social enterprise; Partners with organisations across Europe to research and develop systems for Convergence - methods to promote reductions in greenhouse gases while maintaining social and economic equity; Produces world-class research for the public's benefit on issues related to the environment, sustainability, natural resources and social justice.
