Mission

AMURT UK are about to launch an exciting new project - the Made In Hackney Local Food Kitchen - in the basement of their not-for-profit health food shop Food For All that has been serving the people of Hackney to acecss affordable healthy food since 1986. The basement is currently being refitted using recycled and reclaimed materials to be a welcoming and artistic community kitchen that celebrates the thriving local food growing scene in the borough and the communities multi-ethnic food culture. The project aims to improve the wellbeing of the community by providing access to healthy, organic, locally grown food; developing lost-art local food cooking and processing skills; offer a range of free-to-attend cookery courses and workshops; support local food growing projects; encourage and support food based entrepreneaurship and offer a range of volunteer and apprenticeship positions. The facility will also teach participants home composting skills, how to make non-toxic household cleaning products, be a venue for food activism and educate users and influencial community members such as teachers, community/youth leaders etc the principles of global food ethics and the health, environmental and ethical challenges of our current industralised food system. It will be a place where healthy, affordable, fair, cruelty free local food is celebrated, enjoyed and educated around.
