Mission

We believe that with the right knowledge, developing coastal communities can live in harmony with their marine environments.Blue Ventures is an award-winning social enterprise that works with local communities to conserve threatened marine and coastal environments, both protecting biodiversity and alleviating poverty. Our business models include ecotourism, sustainable fisheries management, aquaculture and blue carbon. Our acclaimed conservation programmes work with some of the world's poorest coastal people to develop conservation and poverty alleviation initiatives that protect biodiversity and coastal livelihoods. The results of our work help us to propose new ideas to benefit coastal communities everywhere. We have won awards for our entrepreneurial solutions for sustainable development, including the SEED Award, the 2006 Equator Prize and the 2011 Buckminster Fuller Prize. We've created the largest community-managed marine reserves in the Indian Ocean, and pioneered ambitious research programmes tackling critical issues facing marine biodiversity conservation and resource-dependent coastal communities.

Additional Information

Blue Ventures is an award-winning social enterprise that works with local communities to conserve threatened marine and coastal environments, both protecting biodiversity and alleviating poverty. Our business models include ecotourism, sustainable fisheries management, aquaculture and blue carbon. Our acclaimed conservation programmes work with some of the world's poorest coastal people  Alongside our work in fisheries management and protected area development, our programmes encompass marine and fisheries research, endangered species conservation, and environmental education and community capacity building.  And beyond more ‘conventional’ approaches to conservation, we also manage sustainable aquaculture initiatives, family planning and public health projects, and advocate at national and international levels for fisheries policy reform. We provide scholarships that ensure hundreds of children are able to attend school. We have also provided marine science training to over fifty Malagasy science graduates. Through our marine expeditions, volunteers from around the world join us on career breaks, student gap years and internships, working closely with our field research teams, in partnership with local communities. We have a commitment to responsible travel on all of our expeditions.
