Additional Information
There are an estimated fifty million people in slavery today - more than at any other time in history. Hagar exists to stop slavery and heal and empower survivors. Hagar's vision is for communities to be free and healed from the trauma of trafficking, slavery and abuse. With nearly 30 years of expertise, Hagar works in Afghanistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Singapore, Solomon Islands and Vietnam, with support offices in Australia, USA, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. In October 2022, we relaunched Hagar UK to generate essential additional funding, as sadly only 0.2% of survivors are currently receiving trauma-informed care, and of those survivors, Hagar only has funding for 1 in every ten referrals.
Hagar run programs that will help put a stop to slavery, trafficking and abuse, these include:
- Community campaigns in at risk communities to build awareness and minimize the risk of human trafficking, slavery and abuse.
- Employment and income development opportunities in high-risk communities to reduce vulnerability.
- Training local authorities and stakeholders to understand and be equipped to address and reduce human trafficking and slavery
Within this holistic support is our world leading trauma informed care. At Hagar we are committed to the Whole Journey. The Whole Journey starts with a survivor - an individual who has experienced severe trauma as a result of slavery, trafficking, or abuse. No one journey or client is the same. Our approach is to provide individualised care for every survivor we come into contact with. From the moment that individual enters our care, we work with them to assess what their needs are, and offer a full range of intensive and individualised services. We rebuild trust and resilience.
We can provide a safe place to live, counselling, case management services, legal support, education, financial support to start a small business, safe, empowering jobs and family reintegration. We create opportunities to ensure that the individual is not simply surviving, but thriving. The Whole Journey encapsulates each step taken by a survivor toward healing. Our goal is for each individual to be a champion for change in their own life and in the community.
We also undertake capacity building for other agencies to deliver our programs. In addition, we work with Governments and stakeholders at country and international level to prevent and stop trafficking, slavery and abuse. We also work alongside local NGOs and also partner or deliver on behalf of international NGOs including Tearfund, UNICEF and Save The Children.
