Additional Information

Football for Hope, Peace and Unity (F.H.P.U Enterprise) was born out of Eric Murangwa Eugene’s initiative and vision. The former Rwandan international football player wanted to use his love and experience of football to serve his community, and worked together with both fellow Rwandans and non-Rwandans to create this group. A combination of both Murangwa’s personal life experience and that of general views for sport’s role as a positive force for social change was the reason behind the determination for initiating FHPU. During the 1994 Rwandan Genocide Murangwa was protected together with his family by fellow Rayon Sports team members irrespective of racial difference and thanks to his teammates Murangwa and his family were able to survive the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. These two elements have given Murangwa a deeper belief in the power of sport to change people and as a result FHPU has since embarked on a long journey by introducing “beautiful game” as a step in Rwanda’s reconciliation, unity and development process as well as building a better and peaceful society for the world at large. F.H.P.U main purpose is to use sport and football in particular as a tool to promote unity and reconciliation among Rwandan youth in order to prevent tragedies such as the 1994 Rwandan Genocide from occurring in the future, as well as to help with young people’s personal development by practicing sport with a greater purpose and a greater sense of self. With this objective, FHPU also aims to support the further development of Rwandan Football and sport in general. Today, F.H.P.U. helps to foster, through the medium of sport and football in particular, ties between Rwandans of the Diaspora and their native country as well as other communities.
