Mission

UK Cohousing Network is a community interest company that promotes collaborative, resident led neighbourhoods that are great to live in, create fantastic community spirit, reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, have lower carbon footprints. Cohousing offers a great environment in which to resize for independent living in older age and to bring up families. Cohousing neighbourhoods are design, developed and managed by their residents who have their own private homes combined with shared community facilities like common houses to eat and meet together, shared gardens, car pools, energy generation, allotments, gardens. Inspired by co-ops and urban designs from Denmark in the 1970s there are now 25 cohousing schemes in the UK with 25 planned to be launched in the next 3-5 years and 60 in development. In Denmark up to 7% of the population are thought to live in co-ops and cohousing schemes - so there is potential to scale the values and principles of cohousing in many ways for a better collective future in the UK. Additional Information

We are looking for help on a couple of projects: 1) Surveying for potential demand/interest in collaborative housing (sharing resources and more neighbourly ways of living in resident led neighourhoods) amongst (1) people thinking about retirement (2) families and general needs housing to help us establish and identify potential demand. 2) Raising awareness of cohousing amongst developments, investors and policy decision makers.
