SS Shieldhall is a unique ship that represents an important part of Britain's maritime heritage. She is a working steamship that attracts visitors from around the world. In 2009 she became flagship of the National Historic Ships Fleet and is recognised as being of significant national importance for preservation. Shieldhall is owned and operated by Solent Steam Packet an exempt charity based in Southampton. She is managed and sailed entirely by volunteers. A programme of summer sailings plus limited corporate, filming and private charters generate our only income. Shieldhall provides training opportunities, work experience and rehabilitation support to young and old mainly from the Hampshire area and engages a large number of devoted and passionate volunteers. The Charity has attracted Trust and Foundation support in the past and is now seeking Heritage Lottery Fund support for a major programme of conservation and enhancement that will preserve the ship for future generations and provide facilities on board to attract a new and extended customer base. By developing this new "offering" we believe the ship will be self sustainable into the future and encourage new customers and particularly corporates to come on board and enjoy the wonderful experience of a ship in steam.
