Rebounders classes are open to children with any type of need or disability that would prevent them from attending a normal leisure centre trampoline class, or would put them at a disadvantage and therefore under pressure and stressed in such a class. This may be for physical, learning, behavioural or communication based reasons. Rebounders members range from those attending mainstream schools with mild coordination, language or learning difficulties, to those attending special schools with little or no mobility, speech or understanding. Siblings are also welcome to attend classes. There is a lot of emphasis nowadays on the importance of inclusion, but we have found from experience that children are much more relaxed, and therefore more responsive when working in a group with others of similar ages and abilities, than when having to try to keep up with their more able or coordinated peers. Their enjoyment is also much greater if they are not constantly feeling under pressure. This is especially so with children from mainstream schools, who struggle to keep up in all physical activities in school (and who often dread school sports days), as they are aware of their limitations and the fact that they are “not quite as good as the others”. One Mother told us how her son used to complain to her that his legs didn’t work properly as he always struggled to keep up in School, but howhis attitude changed after receiving his first trampoline badge, as he now had his own sport that he could boast about in school!
