Animal Welfare
Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi (CIWY): the pioneer of the environmental movement in Bolivia, recognized nationally and internationally for founding centres dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. CIWY is a Bolivian organization that works in defense of animal rights and environmental justice; it was founded in 1992. It manages three wild animal refuges in different parts of the Bolivian Amazon. Work at the refuges is dedicated to caring for, rehabilitating and re-releasing where possible a wide range of rescued species; species that had previously fallen victim to trafficking and abuse. CIWY is also devoted to the education of environmental awareness within the country's youth. It runs workshops, environmental actions and training programmes for hundreds of Bolivian children. Friends of Inti Wara Yassi (FIWY) is the UK branch of the Inti Wara Yassi community and a charity registered in England & Wales (charity number: 1124355). Established in 2008, FIWY provides administrative support and raises funds and awareness for CIWY's work. For more than 20 years CIWY has: Cared for and rescued wildlife Given disadvantaged youth a sense of purpose by involving them in wildlife care Educated the Bolivian public to respect widlife and their country's precious biodiversity CIWY's main focus continues to be helping animals affected by the trade in wild animals. Although in more recent years, CIWY has dedicated more time to trying to prevent the illegal animal trade, going to the root cause of the need for its work. As Bolivia's leading organization in wildlife rights and care, CIWY hopes to make drastic changes to its country's view of wild animals and to work towards ending a cruel trade that removes them from their natural homes.
