Additional Information
The Ecological Land Co-operative (ELC) is a social enterprise and co-operative society established to provide affordable sites for ecological land based livelihoods in the UK. Our first project, delivered last year, is a cluster of 3 smallholdings for new entrants to organic agriculture. We also provide the smallholders with a mentor each and co-ordinate work weekends, where members and supporters work on the smallholdings. As well as providing for new ecological farm businesses, the site forms part of a study which will monitor over a 5 year period changes in ecological services, whole farm productivity, livelihoods generated, and the ecological footprints of the residents.
Our work has been supported widely, including by: Zac Goldsmith MP, Sir Jonathon Porritt CBE, Professor Tim Lang (Professor of Food Policy, City University) and the Soil Association. We are ranked no. 17 on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s index of social enterprises (SE100).
