Mission

Significant Seams draws on both the scientific and social characteristics of sewing to build community and support the vulnerable and disadvantaged. Significant Seams fosters support, new perspectives, and practical skills, all which nurture self-confidence and community, through textile crafts and traditions. We support and encourage people to believe in themselves, help themselves, and in the process get to know, trust, and support others better at least, this is way we aim to do everyday.

Additional Information

Founded in 2011, Significant Seams is a social enterprise providing a space for local people to meet others, learn new skills and build community through crafting. We recognise that sewing and crafting activities have long established health and social benefits and run a number of programmes to support those who are undergoing life transitions or experiencing challenging circumstances. For example, our signature programme Waiting for Baby teaches mothers how to sew a bib or breastfeeding pillow, and teach them about nutrition at the same time. We also run more conventional skills workshops, and sell patchwork and quilting supplies and haberdashery in our space and through our website. Initiatives such as these support our therapeutic programmes and activities. Our work also takes us into the community through partnerships with children's centres, community centres, domestic violence and sexual violence charities, and other local groups, and also through art projects which engage with our community and environment.
