Animal Welfare
The Native America Humane Society has been organized to bring together Indian country stakeholders to find solutions for the challenges facing Native communities in humanely managing their animal populations by working collaboratively with Tribal, Federal, and State agencies as well as private, local, nonprofit sectors to engage and leverage resources. Currently, Tribal Nations experience significant health and safety problems for community members caused by stray and free roaming animals within their boundaries this includes stray dogs, feral cats, and feral horses. Further, most communities do not have the resources to humanely control animal populations as there are more pressing social and economic issues to deal with. Yet, the ubiquitous “rez dog” represents a more insidious problem for Native communities, the loss of traditional knowledge and connection to a higher purpose. By renewing the commitment to honoring all beings, Native people can once again become proud of their role as protectors.
