Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal

Mission

Our mission is to develop sustainable livelihoods to combat poverty and environmental degradation within and around Niokolo-Koba National Park. Our strategy is to use participatory-film in local languages as an information-transfer tool to establish simple technologies and agricultural practices that reduce pressure on natural resources within the park, increase food security, and create income-generating activities. Our current work focuses on artisanal recycling, training women to build a local design of brick stove, environmental education in schools and promotion of agro-forestry. Future plans include DIY solar panels, food preservation, and the growing of bamboo and creation of bamboo products.

Additional Information

Niokolo Koba National Park is located in south-eastern Senegal. It encompasses an area of over 913,000ha of gallery forests, savannah grass floodplains and dry forests which support some of the last remaining populations of chimpanzees, lions and wild dogs in West Africa. Equally the park is a vital source of natural resources for the people living in the surrounding villages, subsistence farmers who rely on the park for food, fuel and building materials. But as population growth increases and soil fertility worsens, the park, its wildlife, and peoples' livelihoods and lives are increasingly at risk.
