Children and Youth
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund has been transforming lives since 1995, when President Nelson Mandela personally dedicated a third of his annual presidential salary to the children of South Africa. The history of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund is the heart-warming story of Mr Mandela’s determination to create a better future for children, and his encouragement of all those people who had so much, to help young people who had nothing. He could see past the horrors affecting children - poverty, inadequate education, high child mortality rates, poor diet, lack of sanitation and unclean water supplies. He wanted to help protect children from problems with substance abuse in families, babies born into slums where they were rarely, if ever, safe and the growing national crisis of HIV/Aids. Mr Mandela was determined to find, and fund, solutions. He believed in the potential of the children around him.
