Cancer is a physical disease that can sap the energy of some of the strongest children. We are committed to helping them keep their spirits strong and never lose hope for their future. All art forms are empowering and we believe we can help the doctors and nurses help these kids. A Free Bird is a new 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York that provides children being treated for cancer, or recovering from cancer, with opportunities that allow them to explore their artistic passions. We believe the continued exploration of their passions gives these young people the strength and power necessary to help them fight their illness. A Free Bird collaborates with artists who practice the visual arts and design, writing, painting, sculpting and performance arts in order to provide children with both an outlet for their creative energies and hope for their futures. We have three main programs: DREAM, FREE, and FIGHT FREE. Under DREAM, children with cancer or in remission are given the chance to explore their passions by attending one of the many artistic venues in New York City. FREE is designed to meet the needs of children in remission who feel that their artistic progress has been stymied by illness. We provide children with information and resources that allow them to continue their artistic journey. We connect them with professionals in their field, as well as collect information about grants, contests, publishers and other outlets that young artists can tap into while rediscovering their artistic track. Our FIGHTFREE program consists of individualized arts tutoring for young artists who are being treated for cancer. We set up each child with a talented, caring tutor for one-on-one lessons, so that they can continue with their chosen art form even while undergoing treatment. These lessons occur weekly, for 6 to 12 weeks. A Free Bird provides the necessary equipment and allows instructors to come directly to a child’s place of residence or hospital, to carry out their lessons.
