Mission

Save Brixton Arches aims to support the local community and independent traders fight to protect Brixton Arches. This area has been at the heart of the local community for over 40 years and we want to keep it that way.Around 30 local businesses have been given eviction notices as part of a wider redevelopment of Brixton. These traders have stated that they have not been notified if they are able to return to their units to continue trading but believe that these units will be sold to a number of multi-national organisations such as River Island, Costa, Starbucks, etc.For more information please contact Sara Khan on sara@savebrixtonarches.com.Follow us on Twitter @SaveBrixton spread the word #savebrixtonarches

Additional Information

Background: The businesses found in the arches on Atlantic Road, Brixton Station Road and Railton Road in Brixton and Herne Hill are part of the fabric of the area. Some of these businesses have been trading in the local community for over 40 years. Over 18 businesses have been notified by Network Rail that they have till March 2016 to vacate their units to make way for the regeneration of the area. These traders have stated that they have not been notified if they are able to return to their units to continue trading but believe that these units will be sold to a number of multi-national organisations such as River Island, Costa, Starbucks, etc. A number of community activists have started a petition on change.org with over 20,000 signatures to date. Local graffiti artists including Rambo, Tizer, Pins and Jim Vision have sprayed the shutters of the traders to protest against the redevelopment of the area, and other activists have organised events to protest against the general redevelopment of the area which include Reclaim Brixton.
