Mission

The Ruby Cup has the ability to improve the quality of life of girls living in poverty in terms of social mobility, improved self-esteem, and less worry about cost of purchasing expensive menstrual products. As a project we want to push and spread awareness about the global health issues of menstruation and how it can be a cause of girls missing school and therefore life opportunities. Ultimately, the project promotes the reproductive health and education rights of girls and women by tackling problems associated with menstruation, like social stigmas preventing discourse about it.

Additional Information

The Ruby Cup is an eco-friendly, high quality, healthy menstrual cup for women. It is an ideal form of menstrual hygiene management because it is healthy, long-lasting (8-12 hours and use up to 10 years), financial affordable, and environmentally-friendly. Because sanitary products can be a financial strain, using the cup allows vulnerable young women and girls to continue chasing life opportunities. It was created to overcome the problem of periods for young girls in East Africa who will miss school because they do not have access to other sanitary products. This Enactus St Andrews project will operate its commercial but still nonprofit side in beautiful St Andrews and is still in its preparation stages for its local social mission. For every two bought we will give one away to a homeless woman in Fife. We will expand our charitable impact if this business model proves successful! The Save project involves an open space to discuss menstrual hygiene management, an educational forum, and Ruby Cup training. Participants are given the opportunity to learn about the reproductive system, reproductive health, hygiene, and menstruation. Discussing these topics is important because we have found that girls are not receiving adequate information about puberty and menstrual hygiene management. Most girls and women are unable to describe or define menstruation, other than as the absence of the period indicates pregnancy.
