Renewable World is a Brighton based charity with a global mission to tackle energy poverty in the developing world. We work with local partners in Africa, Asia and Central America to tackle poverty through enabling the provision of small-scale, sustainable renewable energy systems (solar, wind, hydro and biogas) for poor, rural communities. Most of us take energy for granted but we use it pretty much constantly from waking with the morning alarm, to sitting at a computer at work, to cooking dinner at night. It even takes energy to pump water through the pipes to our taps and toilets! Though energy is essential to modern living and to the economic success of any nation, there are still 1.4 billion people globally who lack access to electricity and 38% do not have access to clean cooking facilities. Without energy even the most basic task becomes a challenge. It can take a woman most of the day to collect the water and the fuel needed to cook one meal for her family. It can mean that a farmer has to manually water his crops when the river is miles away. When this backbreaking work only results in a small crop, it is no wonder that one in four people on earth are malnourished and that unpredictable weather caused by climate change is threatening the survival of subsistence farmers in some of the poorest countries on earth. Renewable World works with communities to install manageable technology that helps to provide the water, the energy and the fuel that people need to power themselves out of poverty. Just a small intervention can have huge impacts, giving families the money and the time to invest in health, education and the future.
