Mission

The ASCRS Foundation's Robert Sinskey Eye Institute, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will treat 12,000 impoverished eye care patients this year. Treatment ranges from general eye care to glaucoma and cataract surgeries. In continuous service since 2005, the Eye Institute has a staff of 10, including 2 full-time ophthalmologists. The World Bank estimates for every $1 spent on eye care, $5 is returned to the local economy. In Ethiopia not only is the blind lost to the economy and society at large, but so is the full-time caretaker. Many times this caretaker is a child, who cannot attend school or have a chance for advancement, leading to a lifetime cycle of poverty and destitution. The foundation is proud to help break this blindness-caused cycle through our humanitarian efforts at the Eye Institute.
