Lynch Syndrome is a common but massively underdiagnosed cancer predisposition. This inherited genetic mutation means that carriers are likely to develop aggressive, primary cancers at a young age throughout the body. It is as common as the BRCA breast/ovarian mutations but almost unheard of. Knowledge is power because, through screening and surveillance, many cancers can be prevented or caught early but for now, only 5% of those with the Lynch syndrome know that they have it. Each child of a person with Lynch syndrome has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the mutation. This is what Lynch Syndrome Australia is committed to changing. A greater understanding of Lynch syndrome amongst the medical profession and general public alike will lead to informed genetic counselling and testing and many more people actively managing their condition, not finding out, too late, that they are their family members are at risk.
