Disability
Legs4Africa’s founding principle is to minimise waste and maximise life. By collecting redundant prosthetic legs from across the UK and shipping them out to Western Africa we are starting to dispel the isolation that disability brings. We take something that is unwanted, something that has been thrown away and we give it value. We do this through the simple expedient of getting as many of the 5000 legs which are thrown away every year as possible into the hands of the people who truly need them. After saving the legs from an untimely and expensive demise, we check them for quality and usability after which they are shipped out to West Africa. Our partner mobility units then match the legs to their patients and provide any adjustments that are needed. So far we have sent equipment to The Gambia, Senegal and Zambia and have established partners in Ghana, Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone. We are proud to say that in just two years we have managed to get 1500 African amputees walking again, something which would never have happened without the diligence of our team and the kind generosity of our supporters. We work on a small budget and focus on building strong networks here in the UK, over in Africa and the 5000 miles in between. Our team is composed of volunteers and professionals who are working hard to refine the model even further to ensure that we can provide even more prosthetics to even more amputees in the most efficient and cost effective way.
