In 2014, 270,000 people needed a replacement passport and around 40 per cent of the passports replaced each year belong to people in their twenties, with approximately 10,000 of those lost while on a night out in a bar, club or other venue. This means that the cost to replace lost passports is around £19.5 million every year with up to £7.8 million attributable to passports lost by young people.  At the same time, a passport’s primary function is to enable international travel, rather than secure admission into events, cinemas, local sweet shops etc. Currently, the only other widely-accepted proof of age and identity alternative in the UK is the driving licence but there is still the danger of simple identity theft due to the fact it has personal information shown including your home address! Fraud due to stolen credit and debit cards has risen to its highest levels since its peak in 2006. Some £58.9million was lost in 2013, marking a 7 per cent increase on the previous year.
