Refugee Women Connect, previously known as MRANG, is a women-only charity set up to support women asylum-seekers, refugees and survivors of trafficking. We work together to build a safe life in the UK for all women in the asylum seeker and refugee community.

Additional Information

Refugee Women Connect exists because women asylum seekers and refugees face inequality and are denied social justice. Refugee and asylum-seeking women can be vulnerable and isolated, not knowing what their rights are or how to exercise those rights. Refugee women have to overcome many barriers to accessing services and support and even when asylum seeking women have been able to get support they face being moved on at short notice to another area where they have no support networks. The women engage with us at an important turning point in their lives where they have left an abusive or conflict situation and are trying to deal with the huge change to their lives that this brings about at the same time they are trying to navigate the complex asylum process. Our current activities include an extensive outreach programme which incorporates weekly visits to Initial Accommodation Centres and weekly drop-ins where women can access a range of emotional and practical support and activities. We are also part of various multi-agency drop-ins that take place across the region. With the support of our volunteers, we have been able to accompany women to appointments to offer much-needed support and encouragement and are hoping to develop this work further in the future. We also run a project just for perinatal women which provides a weekly support group with home visits for those unable to attend the group. In response to the increased need for mental health support, we offer self-esteem support groups and one to one emotional support. With the rise in homelessness and lack of legal support we are developing our casework, including becoming OISC accredited, to respond to the increased need for casework.

Create a Christmas appeal video

Description

Refugee Women Connect is looking for some help to create an appeal video, potentially an animation, for our Christmas appeal. This appeal will go live on 1st October so it is a quick turnaround. The theme of the appeal is the concept of doors closing in the faces of refugee women in the UK. I would like to see a hint towards the story of Mary and Joseph searching for a room in Bethlehem but displayed without obvious religious symbolism. The story would also need to have a moment of hope at the end with a tagline along the lines of...."Your support keeps doors open for refugee women and lets them build a safe life in the UK." Aside from the overall theme, the style and story within the video are up for discussion and your input would be greatly received. Any assistance given with the appeal video would be widely accredited on the video, social media, our blog and through emails. We would also allow any person who took on the project to use the appeal as a case study, for which I would provide an in-depth testimony and recommendation for.
