Additional Information
We're the only charity operating in the UK (registered in England and Wales) since 1985, to raise funds for research into aplastic anaemia and allied rare bone marrow failures, and provide everyone affected by these devastating diseases with emotional support and information. Some 100-150 people, both children and young adults (mostly between the ages of 10-20) and older (60+) people will be diagnosed in England per year, of whom about a third reach out to us.
The Aplastic Anaemia Trust has embarked on a journey of modernisation and transformation following the appointment of a new CEO so that we become a Go-to organisation for everyone affected, can raise awareness of the devastating effects of the diseases, raise more funds for clinical research so that patients' survival rates reach 100% and they carry on to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Currently around 80% of people with aplastic anaemia are treated successfully, which is in large part due to our ongoing effort.
We have strong collaborative links established with world-renowned centres of excellence in haematology including St Georges and King's College Hospitals in London, having funded ground-breaking research, clinical support specialist posts and equipment, all leading to a state-of-the-art treatment centre, much improved treatment success rates, data banks, innovative clinical trials, publications in industry journals and thus getting closer to finding a cure.
Our patient support community is thriving and nearly 800 member strong. In addition, we have established a closed Facebook support network with nearly 1,200 members providing peer-to-peer support.
