Mission

Rancho Mastatal is an education center, working permaculture farm, lodge and community rooted in environmental sustainability, meaningful, place-based livelihoods, and caring relationships. We offer profound, innovative and authentic apprenticeships, residential workshops and guest experiences. We practice, promote and teach about natural building, fermentation, permaculture design, renewable energy, agro-forestry both with local communities and international visitors. Although we are technically a business all of the money that we make is re-invested in our educational mission, we offer workshops to Central Americans, through our scholarship programs, we support local people in their own educational pursuits and we help develop local infrastructure by working at the primary and secondary school. We are deeply embedded in the local community employing nearly 10% of our community and providing work and opportunities to many others.

Additional Information

Our campus encompasses more than 300-acres of picture-perfect waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, idyllic swimming holes, impressive trees, extraordinary wilderness views, and pristine habitat for the area's rich flora and fauna. Visitors and participants have access to over 14 km of trails, an extensive library, our working permaculture farm, and the tireless team who make the Ranch such a unique place to learn. We are located in the rural farming town of Mastatal, situated on the edge of the last remaining virgin rainforest of Costa Rica’s beautiful Puriscal County. It is a wonderful place to take in Costa Rica culture, practice your Spanish, visit other permaculture projects, or catch a pickup game of fútbol.

We practice, promote and teach about natural building, fermentation, permaculture design, renewable energy, agroforestry and more. Time spent on our campus varies with the interest and age of the groups, but typically secondary school groups, spend 4 - 6 days at the Ranch, where they learn about Natural Building, Permaculture and Farm to Table food, whilst enjoying the local wildlife, community and swimming holes. It is often an opportunity for kids to reconnect with nature, each other and learn and experience life in a practical meaningful way. The remaining portion of their time in Costa Rica is usually spent at the Beach, learning to surf, visiting national parks etc... but groups exact itinerary can be customized to meet their needs. We also run more in depth experiences with older students from university focusing deeper on our areas of expertise. In order to effectively complete this job we need someone to visit and experience our center in Costa Rica (self-funded), develop marketing material, brochure etc... and then recruit and identify individuals that are interested in bring their groups to learn and live at Rancho Mastatal.
