Guitars Gathering Dust

Mission

The mission behind GGD is a simple one .. a group of like minded men who all believe in the joy and empowerment that being able to play a musical instrument brings (namely the guitar) are trying to create a more structured pathway for second hand guitars to be recirculated and utilised by children based music charities such as The Song Room and The Australian Children's Music Foundation. Current statistics show that approximately three in four Australian children are currently missing out on music education in schools. The aim of GGD is to endeavour to get as many second hand guitars in the hands of Australian school children by creating a social awareness campaign to convince people to donate an old guitar that may be gathering dust in a cupboard or under a bed.We are looking at partnering with organisations such as The Red Cross, The Salvation Army and The Mens Shed to provide a drop off point for donated guitars ( that have been gathering dust ) These guitars will typically be old and somewhat unloved with their owners likely to have given up on learning or playing guitar and who would like to see that instrument re-circulated and used in a trusted music program that deliver great outcomes for children that may not be able to afford lessons or a new instrument. Our goal is to be able to run a trial program with The Mens Shed Association where we utilise the skills of experienced luthiers to train members of the Mens Shed to do basic guitar repairs and set-ups on pre-loved instruments. The aim is to restore an old guitar to its maximum playability .. in some instances this may just involve a re-string , tune and clean but in other cases the set up may involve more specialised work to return the instrument to its maximum playability.
