Mission

We help people isolated, disconnected and struggling with dementia. We help them be finding out what their favourite music is and putting it on an mp3 player. Then we train their carers how to discover the most therapeutic way of using the music. Our approach is highly scalable and the ongoing costs are low. We want to reach the 300,000 people living with dementia in care homes and the 500,000 people living with carers at home. Our Henry video has approx 62m views - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyZQf0p73QMWe are established in the US (currently working with over 80,000 people) - but in the UK we are starting from scratch and really need some help on the social media side of things. We don't have any budget at the moment but hope to be able commission support in the future.Your help would us reach more carers/sons/daughters/family/friends who could benefit from our work, direct people to our planned crowdfunding campaign and build the essential group of supporters we will need to scale quickly.

Additional Information

Music & Memory The mission of Music & Memory is to "enhance quality of life through personalised music." The vision is a world where every individual with dementia (or other cognitive impairment) has access to their beloved, life-affirming music that enables them to experience joy in their lives, connect with themselves and others around them, and where all generations can engage proactively in support. There are 1.0m people with dementia and other cognitive impairment in the UK, cared for at home or in care organisations. There is an increasing awareness of the benefit of personalised music as a fast acting, non-pharmaceutical way of connecting people with their memories and a sense of self. In the UK it is estimated that there are over 800,000 people with dementia, 150,000 with Parkinson’s disease, and significant numbers with cognitive impairment resulting from a stroke. It is anticipated that there will be 1 million people living with dementia by 2025. People with cognitive impairment tend to be cared for initially at home. As conditions advance they may move to a care home (whether residential or nursing home). In the UK nearly 500,000 people with dementia are cared for at home, and over 300,000 people are cared for in care homes. Typically in the UK care homes 70% of residents have dementia. Music & Memory UK - Strategies Strategy 1: Raise Awareness among the general public and key user groups of the benefits of personalised music to people with dementia and others. Clearly position Music & Memory as the right solution to achieve these benefits. Engage key (target) groups and individuals with this inspiring message. Strategy 2: Advocacy on behalf of individuals who will benefit. Build/ access robust qualitative and quantitative research evidence, for the benefits of personalised music. Build close links with decision makers in political, economic, health, social and charitable institutions, so that those who will benefit will be able to access it. Strategy 3: Train and Support Caregivers to enhance the quality of life of individuals with dementia/ other cognitive impairment, through personalised playlists. Train and support caregivers to create and use high quality personalised playlists within daily care.
