Mission

‘Mision Surf’ is a community orientated, sports project, working to equip children and adults with the knowledge, techniques and fitness to know how to swim and surf with confidence. The project also uses these sports as a form of therapy for traumatised children. For physical, psychological and social development, swimming and surfing provide an avenue that can empower disadvantaged children. ‘Mision Surf’, under the umbrella of Mision Mexico Children’s Refuge, is situated in an impoverished location where after school sports activities are non-existent. Children and adolescents alike do not have a constructive means to occupy their free time, therefore are more susceptible to destructive influences, such as drugs and alcohol abuse, which inevitably leads to negative behaviour and/or criminal activity. By providing an opportunity for the local community to become engaged in holistic activities such as our sports projects, their children, youth and also the adults have an opportunity to learn valuable life lessons through team and individual involvement. Understanding that many of the community children live in makeshift shacks or extremely basic living conditions, they therefore, do not have resources for swim or surf gear, hence, Mision Surf is responsible for supplying all swimwear, board-shorts, surfboards, leashes, surf wax, towels, plus supplies to repair damaged surfboards. Sports activities offered at Mision Surf are open to both male and female participants, with a focus on encouraging more female involvement.

Mision Surf’s triple bottom line is People, Planet and Profit. People: Mision Surf’s primary purpose is to serve as a work-training platform for Mision Mexico’s young adults to learn, practice and share essential work skills. Moreover, Mision Surf aims to provide community programs based on surf safety and surf training and swim lessons. Planet: Besides our emphasis on showcasing our natural resources, Mision Surf also aims to be a leading organisation in our local community in regards to environmental awareness. We promote this through beach cleanup, environmental education and through our own day-to-day practices. Profit: Mision Surf is Mision Mexico’s own effort to become more self sustainable with profits from Mision Surf directed to Mision Mexico’s operation programs which include; education, health and care. All in all, Mision Surf is a one of a kind initiative aimed to not only provide a unique experience to our guests but also to create a platform with opportunities of employment and income for Mision Mexico’s children, and opportunities of education and the practice of safe and healthy activities for our local community.
