Mission
Demilitarise Education (dED) is a collective on a mission to use research, media, collaboration and technology to support peace movements.
Our current focus is looking at how we can help untangle, expose and end UK University ties to the global arms trade. To do this we will be launching a community research project called 'The People's Plan for Divestment' within this report we aim to address how divesting from arms companies (and fossil fuels in-collaboration with People & Planet) would affect The University of Manchester, how divestment would be possible and what those investments and partnerships could be replaced with both for the success of universities and global sustainability.
After tackling The University of Manchester and fully engaging with the local community we hope to travel UK Universities and build a database which compares UK Universities ties to the global arms trade and encourage the growth of dED communities so we can set a national precedent for divestment and HYPE UP THE PEACE FORCE!
@dED_UCATION every month we get to know and hype a different peace organisation. We have a podcast, we share content, we record a video where we talk about the what we have learnt about their organisation and we have a monthly pub quiz dedicated to their campaign.
As we build our community, research and media presence we will work to look at how Blockchain Technology can best be used to support the success of peace organisations....but we have a long way to go yet!

UK educational institutions and student fees are continuously being used to support the global war economy. dED was born at The University of Manchester (UoM), as Mel & Jin were sick and tired of the level of corruption and destruction our educational institutions subtly promote. Regardless of the fact the University of Manchester promotes themselves as being sustainable and have an ethical investment policy which states they wish to eliminate "armament of military regimes" & "environmental degradation", they continue to partner themselves with companies that do exactly that. By partnerships, we mean from research collaborations, investments, shares held by the University in these companies and promote student graduate schemes within these destructive industries and companies. UoM for example have long term research collaborations with BAE Systems, the world's 3rd largest arms manufacturer in the world and has supplied Saudi Arabia with over £6 billion worth of military equipment & training since the start of the war in Yemen, now considered to be the worst humanitarian disaster of all time. Unfortunately, these partnerships are not uncommon and UoM via its investment and partnerships has direct links to the occupation of Palestine. These investments are made possible from student fees; meaning that international students could be financing the destruction of their own homes without even knowing it.
This is why Mel & Jin are on a mission to hype up the peace force, bringing together a collective of people to engage and promote sustainable development around our very own position in global conflict.
