Mission

Early diagnosis saves lives. We work to support anyone affected by genetic haemochromatosis, the UK's most common undiagnosed inheritable genetic condition. Untreated, the condition can lead to irreparable organ damage, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and severe joint pain. Yet, treatment is simple, effective and cheap. Help us, as we help others.

Additional Information

Genetic haemochromatosis is the UK’s most common genetic condition, directly affecting over 380,000 people. It is a hereditary (recessive autosomal) condition whereby a mutation in the HFE gene prevents the body from regulating iron correctly. Although it is commonplace, the condition is significantly under-diagnosed in the UK. The NHS is aware of just 14,000 people with genetic haemochromatosis. Untreated, the condition can lead to iron overload, where the body is unable to process excess iron. Excess iron is extremely toxic. Genetic haemochromatosis can cause liver disease, cancer, heart disease, chronic fatigue, diabetes, severe joint pain, sexual health issues and neurological issues.

We will provide : a. some rough photos of the intended steps b. lots of encouragement, tea, biscuits and charity swag / tee shirts etc This project can be done anywhere, but needs to be completed before mid January 2020. If you are London or Peterborough based, so much the better for meeting to discuss. Or - if further afield - video conference etc. We've already won two awards for this work (see https://www.patientsafetylearning.org/blog/guys-st-thomas-nhs-foundation-trust-neil-mc-clements-and-haemochromatosis-uk and https://www.patients-association.org.uk/news/big-ideas-for-better-health-awards)
