Mission

Wikimedia UK believes that open access to knowledge is a fundamental right, and a driver for social and economic development. A registered charity, we work with the Wikimedia Projects such as Wikipedia to enable people and organisations to contribute to a shared understanding of the world through the democratic creation, distribution and consumption of knowledge. Wikimedia UK works in partnership with organisations from the cultural and education sectors and beyond in order to unlock content, remove barriers to knowledge, develop new ways of engaging with the public and enable learners to benefit fully from the educational potential of the Wikimedia projects. We support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Wikimedia UK is a small charity in relation to team members, with a national reach and international connections through the Wikimedia Foundation. From time to time we will seek pro bono support for activities we do not have the expertise to achieve.

Wikipedia's 20th Birthday Celebrations!

Description

In 2021 on the 15th January, one of the key Wikimedia projects, Wikipedia, turns 20 years old. To celebrate 20 years of open knowledge and collaboration on the worlds most used online encyclopedia Wikimedia UK want to run a year of events to raise the profile of our projects and their impact. We are seeking pro bono support to advise on the celebration ideas we have for events and support us through connections and actions to reach a wider audience including media engagement and active engagement across our many social media followers. We are planning an initial event on the 15th January to launch the celebrations, so anyone interested will need to be available in December to start working with us. We'd love to hear from anyone interested by the 7th December to enable time to arrange a December meeting.
